WHITE HORSE HARNESS
CLUB
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Club History
One January evening in 1988 Neil Swanson (our past President) invited a group of carriage driving enthusiasts, fed up with driving on their own, to a meeting with the object of starting a driving club. Following discussions and the subsequent election of a chairman, secretary and committee, the White Horse Harness Club was born.
2003 was the 15th Anniversary of the WHHC, for events held during that season commemorative rosettes were awarded in honor of our anniversary.
Over the year's the Club has gone from strength to strength and is now rated among the top driving Club's in the country catering for all levels of driving from those who enjoy pleasure driving with a bit of competition to the more competitive member for which we have Indoor Horse Driving Trials through the winter, and in the summer; Inside-out's, training days/weekends and full one and two day events held at various lovely venues in the Hampshire/Wiltshire areas (the Pewsey Vale; home of the White Horse).
Every year the committee organise an exciting list of events, from winter talks & Demonstrations in January, February and March followed by an event or training weekends from April through to September, (follow link to events diary for specific dates).
The Club's two day Club Championship event is held at the wonderful venue; Manor Farm, West Overton, Nr Marlborough, by kind permission of Michael Maude a staunch supporter of the club. This venue offers spectacular views across the Pewsey Vale throughout the marathon and allows us all six obstacles in the one main arena, which includes a lovely water obstacle, making it exciting for competitors and spectators alike.
A newer venue for the spring is Lady Clarke's Redenham Park which hosts a 2 day event over the May Day weekend. Well supported this is an opener for many at the beginning of the season or an opportunity to get that novice out and compete HC in some for the phases.
The club would welcome hearing from anyone who has a venue that could run an event whether this be dressage and cones, an inside out or a full 2 day club event.
2008 was the clubs 20th anniversary and a fun weekend was held at West Overton in October to mark the event. Organised by the president for the year Barbara Nadin, this included gymkhana games both mounted on foot and driven which was greatly enjoyed by all present.
Recent years have seen the sad demise of some of our original members including our founder Neil Swanson and more recently in 2009 Snowy Cleaver. We have a core of keen members and would like to welcome new members young and old. The current trend of declining entries needs to be addressed and new blood into the club can hopefully ensure that our club flourishes into the future.
